You say Beer Pong, I say Beirut
The debate is probably one of the most heated topics on the Beer Pong circuit (or at least it was). While it
has been documented that Beer Pong started in the '50's at Dartmouth College
fraternities as an evolution of ping pong (or table tennis), it has since evolved
over time. Beer
Pong is
generally played with 2 or 4 players. In the early '90s around the time when
there were bombings in Beirut in the middle east, another
drinking game came onto the college scene that had the benefit of a much shorter
duration of play and could accomodate a larger crowd. It was called Beirut.
Since then, Beirut has taken over the lion's share of such social events on
campuses across the country. Additionally, the narrow tables now used for Beirut
are no longer the traditional, albeit space hogging Ping Pong tables. Rather,
these tables are a series of personalized pride for some folks who claim to
be Beer Pong aficionados. However, the big misnomer is that newbies
to this social game don't know any better other than to say, "Is
that Beer Pong they are playing?" Those newbies have since come and graduated
from the college leaving the Beirut naming a thing of the past. Besides for
them, Beirut has no true meaning since it is not even part of the world news
today. Beer Pong is much more descriptive and cool name for any such
game. Thus in a sad tribute to the original game of beer
pong played with paddles on a ping pong table.... players who know this style of pong,
you are a dying breed, but we salute you!
